Shade gardens are exactly as the name implies, in that they are gardens which are situated in areas that are mostly shaded during daylight hours. This is usually because of trees, shrubs, buildings, and perimeter walls blocking out most of the available sunlight.
As many gardeners can attest to, shade gardening can prove to be quite a challenge, in that the vast majority of plants require sunlight. Even so, there are still several fascinating plants which can thrive in the shade.
In fact, my shade gardens enjoy a special place in my heart because not only do I have a wonderful selection of plants and shrubs, but I find that shade gardens provide you with a wonderful area which is peaceful and tranquil.
Shade gardens have a tendency to rely on plants with interesting form, texture, height and color, which can be just as beautiful as the showy plants seen in sunny gardens. Not to say that you can’t have showy flowers in a shade garden: my shade gardens have lots of colorful flowers from spring through summer and right into fall.
Many people who decide to have a shade garden end up wanting to plant a few trees and shrubs in the area, and if this sounds like you, then you need to realize that the roots from trees and shrubs will place a huge demand on any available nutrients and moisture in the immediate vicinity. This in itself makes it difficult to grow anything in the area, and as such, you will need to make sure you provide adequate moisture and nutrients.
Budding shade gardeners should also bear in mind that you get different kinds of shade, namely: dry shade, moist shade, and wet shade. When you begin planning your shade garden, you should take into consideration the type of shade you’ll be working with. Remember, the amount of moisture present will have a significant impact on what type of plants and flowers you’ll be able to grow.
